We were liars book cover

We Were Liars

From the moment I cracked open the pages of E. Lockhart’s “We Were Liars,” I was swept into a world of privilege, family secrets, and youthful idealism. The novel promised a gripping tale of mystery and tragedy set against the backdrop of an affluent family’s private island, but as I delved deeper into its enigmatic narrative, I found myself torn between appreciation for its ambition and frustration at its execution.

The story revolves around the Sinclair family, heirs to a vast fortune, who spend their summers on a private island. Narrated by Cadence Sinclair, a teenage girl struggling to recover from an accident that has left her with amnesia, the novel weaves a complex web of family dynamics, love, and betrayal. At its core, “We Were Liars” attempts to explore the darkness lurking beneath the facade of wealth and perfection, but it does so in a way that feels more forced than authentic.

One of the novel’s strengths lies in its prose. Lockhart’s writing is poetic and lyrical, infusing the narrative with a dreamlike quality that mirrors Cadence’s fractured memories. The island itself becomes a character, vividly described and hauntingly beautiful. The author’s ability to evoke a sense of atmosphere is undeniable, drawing readers into the idyllic world of the Sinclairs with finesse.

However, the novel’s ambitious attempt to create a mind-bending twist ultimately falls short. While the big reveal is undoubtedly shocking, it lacks the necessary groundwork to make it truly impactful. Instead of feeling like a natural progression of the story, the twist comes across as a contrived attempt to generate shock value, leaving me with a sense of disbelief rather than awe.

Furthermore, the characters, including the enigmatic Liars themselves, lack depth and development. Cadence, despite being the narrator, feels more like a vessel for the story’s themes than a fully fleshed-out individual. The supporting characters, while intriguing in their own right, remain largely one-dimensional, their actions and motivations often difficult to empathize with.

The novel’s thematic exploration of privilege and its consequences is both timely and relevant. It attempts to dissect the corrosive effect of wealth on relationships and self-identity, but these themes are not explored with the depth they deserve. The narrative touches on important issues but fails to delve into them in a meaningful way, leaving the reader with a sense of missed opportunity.

“We Were Liars” is a novel that tantalizes with its promise of mystery and intrigue but ultimately falls short of its potential. While the prose is undeniably beautiful and the atmosphere is hauntingly atmospheric, the lack of well-developed characters and a forced twist diminish the overall impact of the story. Readers seeking a compelling exploration of privilege and family secrets might find moments of satisfaction here, but be prepared for a resolution that might leave you more puzzled than enlightened.

Your lie in April

Your Lie in April: A Symphony of Tears and Reflections

It does seem like I am finding more and more emotional and sad animes here but sad stories have the greatest appeal, remember? The bittersweet world of “Your Lie in April” is yet another heart-wrenching anime that tugs at your heartstrings. First things first, be prepared to have your emotions toyed with like a pianist at the keys. This anime revolves around the story of Kōsei Arima, a prodigious pianist who loses his ability to hear the music after a traumatic event. Enter Kaori Miyazono, a free-spirited violinist, who not only reawakens his passion for music but also ignites a flame in his heart.

The anime brilliantly captures the journey of Kōsei and Kaori as they navigate their own personal struggles and form a deep, soul-stirring bond. It’s a tale of love, loss, and the healing power of music. The characters in “Your Lie in April” are so beautifully flawed and human that they jump off the screen and into your heart. Kaori’s vivacious spirit and zest for life are infectious, drawing you into her world. Their chemistry, both in music and in life, is palpable, and you can’t help but root for them.

But let’s not forget the other characters who add layers of depth to the story. Tsubaki, Kōsei’s childhood friend, brings a mix of unrequited love and unwavering support. Every character has their own inner demons, their own heartaches, and it’s through these struggles that they grow and connect with one another. The animation of “Your Lie in April” is a visual feast, capturing the emotional nuances of the story with vibrant colors and stunning musical performances. The blend of traditional animation and surreal imagery during the performances creates a visual symphony that resonates with the viewers. It’s like the anime itself is singing along with the characters, amplifying the emotional impact.

Now, let’s dive into the sadness that permeates the anime. “Your Lie in April” deals with heavy themes of loss, grief, and mortality. It forces us to confront the fragility of life and the inevitability of our own mortality. The anime doesn’t shy away from these emotions; it embraces them, infusing every frame with a melancholic beauty that leaves a lasting impression. Without giving away too much, the climax of the story hits like a tidal wave of emotions. It’s a heart-wrenching revelation that challenges everything we thought we knew. Sold on a Monday

Sold on a Monday

Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris is a captivating and emotionally charged novel that had a profound impact on me. Through its engaging storytelling and vivid characters, the book explores themes of compassion, second chances, and the power of redemption. As I delved into its pages, I was immediately drawn into a world of heartache and hope, and the story resonated deeply with me on a personal level. The story follows the life of Ellis Reed, a journalist searching for a career-defining story during the Great Depression. When he photographs two young children with a sign that reads “2 Children for Sale,” he sets off a chain of events that will change his life and the lives of those involved forever.

What struck me most about this novel was the author’s ability to create a poignant and emotionally charged atmosphere. The writing style was captivating, and I found myself completely immersed in the story, experiencing the characters’ joys and sorrows alongside them. McMorris beautifully depicted the hardships of the era and the desperate choices people faced, evoking a sense of empathy and understanding. The characters were deeply nuanced and felt incredibly real. Ellis, in particular, was a flawed but relatable protagonist, driven by his ambition but ultimately grappling with his own morality. As the story unfolded, I found myself rooting for his redemption and hoping that he would find a way to make amends for his past choices.

One of the most powerful aspects of the book was its exploration of compassion and the impact of small acts of kindness. McMorris skillfully portrayed the ripple effect of Ellis’ photograph, demonstrating how a single moment captured on film could have far-reaching consequences and bring about both heartbreak and healing. Sold on a Monday also tackled themes of family, love, and sacrifice. The relationships between the characters were beautifully portrayed, filled with both tenderness and heartache. I found myself emotionally invested in their journeys and deeply moved by the sacrifices they were willing to make for one another.

I found Sold on a Monday to be a deeply moving and thought-provoking novel that skillfully explores themes of compassion, redemption, and the resilience of the human spirit. Kristina McMorris’s storytelling prowess and her ability to elicit genuine emotions make this book an unforgettable reading experience. It reminded me of the power of empathy and the importance of second chances, leaving me with a renewed appreciation for the beauty and complexity of human connections.

When tomorrow starts without me

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me – David M. Romano

When tomorrow starts without me, I will not be here to see,
That the sun will rise and find your eyes; filled with tears for me,
But please know you’re always in my heart, and I will forever love you,
And know, each time you think of me, I will be missing you too.

When tomorrow starts without me, I need you to understand,
That an angel came, he called my name and took me by the hand.
He told me it was time to go up to heaven far above,
And that I have to leave behind all those I dearly love.

When tomorrow starts without me, I know that you will cry,
For all my life I’d always thought that I would never die.
I had so much life ahead of me; I had so much to do,
It seems almost impossible that I was leaving you.

When tomorrow starts without me, I think of the good days, and the bad,
I thought of all our fights, next to all the fun we had.
If I could have stayed, just for a little while,
I would say I’d always be here, and then I’d make you smile.

When tomorrow starts without me, I’ll realise that this could never be,
As all that would be left of me, is frozen in memories.
Then I thought of all the beautiful things that I would miss tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.

When tomorrow starts without me I will walk through heaven’s gate,
I will feel at home even without my soul mate.
I know this is what I wanted, deep down within my bones,
And God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne.

When tomorrow starts without me I see everything He promised me,
“Today your life on earth is past, and now you can be free.”
“I promise no tomorrow as today will always last,
And since it’s all the same you will not be longing for the past.”

So when tomorrow starts without me don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me I’m right here in your heart.

If he had been with me

If He Had Been with Me

Soohh, I recently dove into the world of “If He Had Been with Me” by Laura Nowlin, hoping for a captivating young adult read. But man, did it disappoint! It could have been a guilty pleasure but I must me getting old as I had tough time digesting this book. Buckle up as this review might not be what you were expecting.

Just for your understanding, here is the plot in short. “If He Had Been with Me” tells the story of Autumn and Finny (Finn), two childhood friends who have been inseparable since they were kids. Autumn has always had a secret crush on Finn but has never found the courage to confess her feelings. Despite their deep emotional connection, they both navigate their friendship without acknowledging their true romantic feelings for each other. Throughout high school, Autumn and Finn spend time together, and their bond only grows stronger. However, Autumn’s longing for a romantic relationship with Finn also intensifies, leading to inner turmoil and constant questioning of what could have been if they were more than just friends. As their senior year progresses, Autumn faces the reality that their paths may diverge after graduation. She grapples with the fear of confessing her feelings, afraid that it might jeopardize their friendship or result in rejection. The novel alternates between the present and flashbacks, revealing significant moments in their friendship. As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that they share a profound understanding of each other, often finishing each other’s sentences and having an unspoken language between them. As the novel reaches its climax, the reader is left with a heart-wrenching realization: Finn had loved Autumn too, but he also struggled with expressing his feelings, believing that Autumn saw him only as a friend. **Spoiler Alert** (written in white ink, select the next lines to see the text) In one poignant moment, Autumn finally decides to reveal her emotions to Finn, but circumstances intervene, and she loses the chance to confess. This missed opportunity leaves her heartbroken and full of regrets.

Alright, now let’s talk about this epic romance between Autumn and Finn. Plotwise it could have been something like 5 centimeters per second. But somehow it felt as fake as those filtered Instagram pictures. Can’t say the relationship between the two lacked depth or authenticity, I wanted to root for them, but all I got were tired clichés and predictable plot twists. And don’t even get me started on the unrealistic expectations this book sets. It’s like they think love can magically solve everything. But we all know that real relationships are messy, complicated, and require more than just a sparkly-eyed soulmate. This old heart feels the book missed the mark big time by sugarcoating the realities of love and life. But I also want to believe that life can be sugarcoated sometimes.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the half-baked exploration of important themes like grief and mental health. They’re brushed over so lightly, it’s like they were checking boxes instead of actually delving into the nitty-gritty. These topics deserved better treatment, more depth, and genuine understanding. Instead, we’re left with superficial nods that felt like an afterthought.

The pacing was all over the place. One moment, I’m trudging through mundane events that had me yawning, and the next, I’m thrown into rushed, over-the-top melodrama. To top it all off, the book leaves loose ends hanging like a poorly tied shoelace. I craved closure, darn it! But no, I’m left dangling with unresolved plot points and an unsatisfied itch for answers. It’s like the author forgot to tie up the loose ends or just didn’t care enough to give us that sense of completion. Felt like it was written by someone I know who loves to leave people hanging and guessing!

So there you have it, folks. “If He Had Been with Me” fell short of my expectations but also left me yearning for more. With its light touch romance, (un)realistic ideals, surface-level exploration of important themes, wonky pacing, and unresolved plot points, it’s not a complete letdown in the world of young adult literature. You might love this, on second thought, if you are looking for a light read (here is the link to Amazon if you fancy light hearted romance novel) on a cold rainy day with soothing music and a scenery. But like I said, I am probably getting older and reading too many of books of this nature, so this wasn’t for me.

grave of the fireflies

Grave of the Fireflies

Of the many animes I have scene in my life, very few have cut me as deep as the Grave of the Fireflies. No one warned me. I did not know what to expect. I sat down with munchies to enjoy a good movie. I thought, looking at its name, that it would be a fantasy or something of the sort. But Grave of the Fireflies was an emotional gut punch right from the beginning.

The plot of the anime is during the devastation of World War II-era Japan. It follows the story of Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, who are forced to navigate the harsh realities of war after their home is destroyed in a bombing raid. The siblings struggle to find food, shelter, and safety while dealing with loss, grief, and the constant threat of starvation. As they cling to each other for support, their bond becomes a beacon of hope in the midst of unimaginable tragedy. The film explores themes of innocence, resilience, and the devastating impact of war on the lives of children. The way the movie portrays the harsh realities of war and its impact on innocent lives is nothing short of brutal. It hits you like a ton of bricks, leaving you gasping for air and clutching your chest. But hold on tight because it doesn’t stop there. “Grave of the Fireflies” continues to tear at your soul as it delves into the heartbreaking bond between Seita and Setsuko. Their sibling relationship is the emotional core of the film, and every moment they share tugs at your heartstrings. You’ll witness their laughter, their tears, their joy, and their pain. Their innocent love for each other is both beautiful and heart-rending.

Oh, and let’s not forget that haunting firefly scene. It’s a quiet, poetic moment of respite in the midst of tragedy. As Seita and Setsuko catch fireflies in a jar, it’s as if time stands still. Their laughter and innocence amidst the darkness are a fragile glimmer of hope. It’s a scene that captures the fragility of childhood and the longing for happiness even in the face of unimaginable sorrow. Be prepared to have your heart shattered into a million pieces during this scene.

The movie’s power lies in its ability to make you feel the characters’ pain and desperation. Whether it’s witnessing Setsuko’s innocent belief in her mother’s return or the heart-wrenching scenes of starvation and despair, every moment hits you like a punch to the gut. It’s a testament to the masterful storytelling and animation that can evoke such raw emotions.

One of the most powerful aspects of “Grave of the Fireflies” is how it forces you to confront the harsh realities of war and its impact on children. It strips away the glorification often associated with war movies and shows the devastating consequences on innocent lives. It serves as a reminder of the human cost and the long-lasting scars left behind. By the end of the movie, you’ll be left emotionally drained and emotionally wrecked. It’s a heartbreaking journey that sticks with you long after the credits roll. You’ll find yourself reflecting on the horrors of war, the resilience of the human spirit, and the bonds that hold us together even in the darkest of times.

“Grave of the Fireflies” is not for the faint of heart. It’s a gut-wrenching masterpiece that will leave you in a puddle of tears. But amidst the sorrow, it carries a powerful message of compassion, resilience, and the importance of cherishing our loved ones. So, brace yourself for an emotional rollercoaster ride that you won’t soon forget.

The Midnight Library: A Novel

‘Never underestimate the big importance of small things,’ Mrs Elm said. ‘You must always remember that.’

The Midnight Library is a masterpiece that transcends genres, blending elements of fantasy, philosophy, and raw human emotion. Matt Haig’s writing style is both engaging and introspective, immersing the reader in a world where time stands still and possibilities abound. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is a beautifully crafted novel that leads to an extraordinary journey of self-discovery. With its captivating storytelling and thought-provoking themes, this book was hard to put down. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Nora, I embarked on a profound exploration of regrets, choices, and the infinite possibilities of life.

What struck me most about this novel was the profound way it delved into the complexities of life and the universal struggles we all face. Nora’s journey through the Midnight Library, a place where she could explore different versions of her life, resonated with my own introspections and contemplations. It made me reflect on the choices I’ve made, the paths not taken, and the impact of those decisions on my present reality.

Through Nora’s experiences, the novel explores themes of regret, depression, and the pursuit of happiness. It dives deep into the human psyche, shedding light on the weight of past mistakes and the longing for a life that could have been. Yet, within the pages of this book, there is also a glimmer of hope, as Nora learns to appreciate the beauty of the present moment and embrace the power of self-acceptance.

Haig’s storytelling prowess lies in his ability to craft multi-dimensional characters who feel incredibly real. Nora’s vulnerability and her search for meaning resonated with me, as I connected with her doubts, fears, and desires. The supporting characters that populate Nora’s journey are equally well-drawn, adding depth and richness to the narrative.

As I turned the pages, I found myself reflecting on my own life and the opportunities that have slipped through my fingers. The Midnight Library reminded me that it’s never too late to make changes, to pursue dreams, and to live a life true to oneself. It inspired me to embrace the present moment and to approach life with a sense of curiosity and wonder.

Matt Haig’s masterful storytelling, combined with the deeply relatable themes, touched me on a personal level. It reminded me of the power of self-reflection, self-compassion, and the inherent beauty of every individual journey. This book has left an indelible mark on my mind, and I will carry its lessons with me as I navigate my own path of self-discovery.

Sometimes it is good to get lost to see who comes looking

Finding Peace in the Forest

Have you ever felt lost in life, unsure of your path and searching for solace? That’s exactly how I felt when I embarked on a trek through a dense forest. As I weaved my way through the tall trees and alongside a rail track, something magical happened. The lush greenery and the presence of small animals captivated me, offering a sense of peace and tranquility. As I ventured into the forest, I found myself lost for a while. Unsure of what direction to take and I could not see the sun. The vastness and unfamiliarity of the surroundings left me feeling disoriented. The rustling of leaves and the echoing silence added to my sense of being lost. But as I continued along the path, an unexpected beauty began to unfold before my eyes.

I came across a forest glade, with the forest enveloping me with its verdant hues and the gentle sway of towering trees. The air felt fresher, as if every breath carried a touch of vitality. The symphony of chirping birds and buzzing insects provided a soundtrack to my journey. Each step revealed a hidden world, with small creatures scurrying beneath fallen leaves and birds flitting from branch to branch. I marveled at the intricate details of nature and found solace in its simplicity. Cutting through the heart of the forest, a rail track added a touch of nostalgia to the ambiance. The sound of distant trains rumbling along the tracks echoed through the trees, adding an element of intrigue to the trek. The juxtaposition of man-made infrastructure amidst the untouched wilderness reminded me of the delicate balance between human progress and the preservation of nature.

The 5km trek was not long. It was almost evening when I neared the end of the trail. The golden rays of the setting sun filtered through the foliage, casting a warm glow upon the surroundings. It was a moment of pure serenity, a time when the world seemed to stand still. I felt an inexplicable connection to the natural world, a deep desire to stay and immerse myself in the beauty of the moment. As civilization beckoned, I couldn’t help but resist its call. The forest had provided me with a respite from the chaos of everyday life. The tranquility and simplicity of nature had awakened something within me. I yearned to linger, to escape the fast-paced world and find solace in the embrace of the wild. In that moment, I realized the importance of disconnecting from the noise and reconnecting with the peace that nature offers. Despite feeling initially lost, I discovered an inner sense of peace amidst the greenery and the presence of wildlife. The sight of tall trees, the harmony of sounds, and the allure of the setting sun reminded me of the beauty that surrounds us when we take the time to appreciate it which I would not come across had I not been lost in the forest. It had similar kind of affect I felt while finding peace in solitude. As I reluctantly made my way back to civilization, I carried with me a renewed appreciation for nature’s ability to soothe and heal.

solitude for self healing

Reflection: The Power of Solitude

We often undermine the power of solitude for improving mental health. Living in today’s fast paced world is difficult. I find myself constantly interrupted with notifications, calls, emails, noises, Netflix and other distractions. Responding to life’s constant demands makes me drained and at the end of day leaves me with zero energy for self development. Through personal experiences, I have realized that embracing solitude not only recharges my energy but also provides the clarity I need to navigate life’s uncertainties.

While embracing solitude is not my cup of tea, but spending time alone is not entirely uncomfortable for me. Despite the fact that my brain floods my mind with uncomfortable and embarrassing moments when I try to sit alone, I feel practicing solitude is essential since it leads to profound personal growth and rejuvenation. When I first embarked on the path of solitude, I faced some initial resistance. Being alone with my thoughts seemed uncomfortable and unfamiliar. I gradually realized that the noise of the outside world was drowning out my own inner voice. Embracing solitude became a conscious choice to prioritize my own well-being and growth. Spending quality time alone, coupled with music, has become my sanctuary, allowing me to recharge and restore my energy. I have learned to indulge in activities that bring me joy and peace. Whether it’s reading a captivating book, taking leisurely walks in nature, taking a short bus journey or simply sitting in silence, these moments have become essential in refueling my spirit. I have come to understand that nurturing myself is not a selfish act but a necessary one to show up as my best self in the world. If you remember that song from the movie up in the air – Help yourself by Sad Brad Smith, it says how you can help others once you have helped yourself to stand on your two feet. Here is the the song if you are interested.

In the quiet solitude, I have discovered the power of self-reflection. Away from external influences, I can delve deeper into my thoughts, emotions, and desires. Journaling has been a profound tool in this process, enabling me to explore my dreams, values, and aspirations. I have gained a deeper understanding of who I am at my core and what truly matters to me. This self-awareness has guided my decisions and led me to align my actions with my authentic self. The solitude I have embraced has provided me with mental clarity amidst life’s complexities. Free from distractions, I can unravel tangled thoughts and find innovative solutions to problems. I have discovered that taking time to pause, reflect, and organize my mind allows me to approach challenges with renewed focus and perspective. It has opened doors to creative ideas and empowered me to make informed decisions. Solitude has allowed me to nurture my emotional well-being. In the solitude of my own company, I have learned to honor and process my emotions without judgment or external influences. It has been a safe space to experience a range of emotions and practice self-compassion. Through this emotional journey, I have cultivated a deeper understanding of myself and developed healthier relationships with others.

My personal journey of embracing solitude has been transformative, offering me the opportunity to recharge my energy and find clarity amidst life’s chaos. Through moments of self-reflection and introspection, I have discovered my authentic self, developed mental clarity, and nurtured my emotional well-being. I encourage you to embark on your own journey of self-discovery, allowing yourself the gift of solitude. Embrace the power of spending time with yourself, and unlock the profound benefits it can bring to your life.

The road not taken

The Road Not Taken – By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Sadness have the greatest appeal

Why do sad stories have the greatest appeal?

As I was browsing the other end of the internet I found this quote: “There are two types of people in the world: Those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.” And I thought, a lot of us like sadness and not to forget the fact that the sad stories, especially the sad love stories (for example, Romeo & Juliet, Titanic) have the greatest appeal! If you look at the greatest love stories across the world, you will see most of them are incomplete and ends in tragedy. I have been pondering over that for a while now. What is it that makes us, human, value the tragedies more than the happily ever after? It is also quite evident that we do not want to revisit those tragedies ever again after we are through but why do we hang onto those stories more than others? Growing up, we all have felt the pangs of remorse, unrequited love, demise of puppy love or crush. We have also gone through the ecstasy of being in love, jumping on cloud nine and all that. But looking back, you will see that the sad memories have found a place in the core memory while the happy ones are often difficult to recall. Apart from the tragedies, I also found the incomplete stories, the ones that ends in a cliff hanger, where the author leaves the ending for the readers to draw also to have similar kind of appeal. And most of us end the stories on a sad note.

Is it us, the humans, find pain and sorrow more interesting as an emotion? When we are happy, we do not register them as vividly as the sad ones. The science says that as humans, we experience sadness more intensely than happiness which they termed as negativity bias – a tendency of our brains to register negative emotions or feelings more strongly than happy memories. And that kind of explains why we often act in a manner detrimental to our cause – it can be self-sacrifice, choosing the wrong option out of guilt, pride, or vanity. In fact, some research has reported that we often overwhelm ourselves with sad stimuli intentionally to cope with reality.

Let me give you an example, I was having this discussion with a friend who said that she listens to sad songs as a way to make peace with her emotions and through these songs, lyrics and tunes, she is able to make sense of what she is feeling and express herself which she otherwise would not be able to do. In agreement with this, a research by Garrido and Schubert (2011), stated that sad music is associated with understanding feelings and engaging in a process of catharsis. When we drown ourselves in sorrow, our brain activates areas that trick us feeling soothed. And that is a chain, we often cannot break. It becomes addictive and we keep on taking wrong decision, as a tragic protagonist, to feel good about ourselves.

I am sure you have heard this song by a-ha (in case it does not load: here is the link to YouTube). It captures all I wanted to write and more. Human brain is amazing, but suicidal. No wonder we make so many bad choices.

My kid has just learned to read and this has been absolutely adorable read for her. The sentences were  short with easy words (as easy as it can be), and the colorful pages and funky fonts made it a keeper. The credit largely goes to Andy Elkerton, the illustrator that turned this cute story in to an absolute master piece. My kid found the illustrations fantastic that made the story engaging. And it was a fun exercise for her to find out the leprechaun in each pages. I think it is safe to say it will find its place right beside ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘Oi Dog (Get off the Frog)’ story.

It Starts with Us by Colleen Hoover

So following the last post about the story, It Ends with Us, I completed the sequel, It Starts with Us by Colleen Hoover in one go. I was curious whether the sequel was as good as the first. When I was done reading both, it was already dawn, time for me to start for my work. Remember how heavy the head feels after staying up all night? Even though I felt my head was heavy as lead, I did not regret going through the stories even though I cannot say I enjoyed the second book as much as the first.

Like I said in the last post, the first story – It Ends with Us, felt personal, but this second story, It Begins with Us, felt like it was trying to give us a fairy tale ending of a happily ever after. Spoiler Alert, after the divorce with Ryle, Lily ends up with her boyfriend from teenage years, a guy named Atlas, a caring person who caters to the needs of Lily and her daughter. He turned out to be the knight in shining armor who Lily needed to protect herself and her kid from her ex-husband. It gloriously puts forward the idea that second chances are important as it might surprise you. But then, it appeared Colleen was trying too hard to paint Ryle as a bad person which was not necessary. When we are talking about giving second chances, it also could work for Ryle that he understood his mistakes and takes a separate path rather than being a monster who would even hurt his own daughter. The story reaching halfway became predictable sticking close to 90’s romantic movie plots.

But nevertheless, every person should read this book as it paints a realistic picture that shows that you can find love and happiness after breakup or divorce and the life does not end there. The tough decision you take may just as well set you up for new fresh life full of happiness and promise.

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

It was a bright sunny day when I stepped into my favourite book store to pick up new books. As I was debating with myself which should I buy, the attendant came up and showed me two books – it ends with us and it starts with us by Colleen Hoover. Apparently I was living under a rock to not have heard about these two and insisted that I must have a go at these. I usually stay away from emotional rollercoasters and slice-of-life novels preferring fantasy and science fictions but I decided to give it a read. And I cannot say I was disappointed. I usually read the plot before I commit to a story to see if that is something I would like to spend time on and to be honest, this was okay.

The book starts with the following:

“As I sit here with one foot on either side of the ledge, looking down from twelve stories above the streets of Boston, I can’t help but think about suicide.”

Shoosh! And there goes my drive to continue reading it. It talks about suicide, in the very first line. And the story is told from the first person’s point of view, not my favourite style. I feel very few writers can balance the narrative from the first person point of view and often fails to bring in both sides of the story. But anyway, I gave it a chance. Overall, I found the story to be mildly interesting, but that’s my opinion. The writer did a beautiful job of capturing the reality of a abusive relationship. One of the reasons I dreaded reading this book was, I know how it feels to be in one and I feared that it may bring up memories that I do not wish to relive. There were many instances I found myself wondering why she was staying. Was she that naïve?

But I also understood why she couldn’t. There is a statement somewhere in the book that I couldn’t agree with “there’s no such thing as bad people. We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things.” I often felt Ryle was vindictive and was acting with malicious intent. If the intent is to wish someone pain, we cannot just term them as people who do bad things, there is a word for the bad people, psychopath. In the end, to my relief, Lily did make the right choice. “It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.” – an incredibly powerful message that wraps the story.

For the unsuspecting readers, the epilogue kind of killed the story while setting the scene for the sequel. I felt, it should have ended with that statement leaving the ending, the new life of Lily, open for interpretation by the readers. Not start a new story and show that she has reached the shore. I hated the same approach that JK Rowling had taken for the last book of Harry Potter. It just spoils that lingering feeling that makes a book special.

If I am done reading the second part, It Starts with Us, I will try to post the review here.

5-centimeters-per-second

5 Centimeters per Second

“5 Centimeters per Second” is a emotional masterpiece that will remain with your for the rest of your life. The name suggests that the cherry blossoms/petals fall downward at a pace of 5 centimeters per second randomly swirling and twirling, ending up in different places. Matching with the name, the anime shows us a young adult relationship that, even if crosses path at some point, ends up in different places. I intent to give you a elaborate review of this anime. Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions because this anime gloriously captures the beauty of paths not taken and the evolution of relationships in life. First things first, the animation is an absolute feast for the eyes. It’s like stepping into a dream world where every frame is meticulously crafted with breathtaking detail. The colors, the scenery, the character expressions – they all come together to create a visual symphony that will leave you in awe. It’s art in motion, my friends.

Now, let’s talk about the story. “5 Centimeters per Second” follows the lives of Takaki and Akari, two souls connected by an unbreakable bond. But life has a way of throwing obstacles in their path, and they find themselves drifting apart. This anime beautifully portrays the ache of missed opportunities and the lingering what-ifs that haunt our hearts. The pacing might be deliberate, but trust me, it’s worth every second. It allows us to savor the small moments, the fleeting connections, and the slow, painful realization of growing apart. It’s like watching life unfold before your eyes, capturing the essence of how relationships evolve over time. Prepare for a bittersweet symphony of emotions as you witness the characters’ hopes, dreams, and heartbreaks. “5 Centimeters per Second” will tug at your heartstrings like never before. It beautifully captures the melancholic longing, the ache of unrequited love, and the bittersweet nostalgia of what could have been. You’ll find yourself emotionally invested, experiencing the characters’ joys and sorrows as if they were your own. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling when it can touch your soul so profoundly.

What makes this anime even more poignant is its exploration of the paths not taken. It shows us the different directions our lives can go and the profound impact those choices have on our relationships. It’s a reminder to cherish the moments we have, to seize the opportunities, and to embrace the journey, knowing that sometimes, even the most heartfelt connections can drift apart. Be warned, though – this anime doesn’t tie everything up with a neat bow. It leaves room for interpretation, inviting you to reflect on your own experiences and the relationships in your life. Some might find this lack of closure frustrating, but to me, it adds to the beauty of the story. It’s like a fleeting moment, forever etched in your heart.

What was majestic was the last few minutes and the end scenes. In the final moments of the anime, we witness a powerful scene where Takaki, standing on a train crossing, catches a glimpse of Akari across a passing train. This scene encapsulates the overarching themes of missed connections and the fleeting nature of relationships. The train serves as a potent symbol, representing the relentless forward motion of time and life’s constant transitions. It embodies the concept of moving on, both physically and emotionally. As the train zooms past, we witness Takaki’s longing gaze, symbolizing his yearning for what once was and what could have been. The brief encounter between Takaki and Akari through the train window carries a profound emotional weight. It encapsulates the essence of missed opportunities and unfulfilled desires. It’s a moment frozen in time, a fleeting connection that serves as a poignant reminder of the paths not taken and the impact of timing on our relationships.

The visual representation of the train passing by also highlights the transient nature of life itself. It reminds us that people come into our lives, touch our hearts, and then depart, leaving us with cherished memories and unanswered questions. It’s a reminder to treasure the present moment, as it may slip away before we even realize it. The scene’s deliberate choice of depicting the train moving in opposite directions further amplifies its significance. It symbolizes the divergence of paths, the choices that lead us on different trajectories. It evokes a sense of melancholy, as we witness the characters’ lives moving apart, forever separated by the passing train.

The absence of dialogue during this scene allows the visual imagery to speak volumes. It invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences of missed connections, unspoken words, and the haunting what-ifs that linger in the depths of their hearts. It’s a testament to the power of silence and visual storytelling in conveying profound emotions and universal human experiences.

Ultimately, the last scene with the train serves as a poignant conclusion to the anime, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer. It encapsulates the themes of longing, missed opportunities, and the transient nature of relationships. It’s a visual and emotional crescendo that leaves us contemplating the choices we make, the paths we take, and the connections we forge in our own lives. So, as the train disappears into the distance, leaving us with a bittersweet ache in our hearts, we are reminded of the fragility of human connections and the profound impact of the paths not taken. It’s a scene that lingers in our minds, urging us to cherish the moments we have and embrace the uncertain journey ahead.

In the end, “5 Centimeters per Second” is an emotional triumph that gloriously captures the beauty of the paths not taken and the evolution of relationships in life. It’s a visual and emotional feast that will leave you contemplative, nostalgic, and perhaps even a little wistful. So, grab some tissues and let yourself be swept away by this masterpiece. You won’t be the same person once the credits roll.
